19 prayers to gain the strength to let go of a relationship

It’s hard to let go of a relationship, especially if you’ve been with your partner for so long.

And while it may take some time for you to *really* get over them, these 19 prayers can help you gain the strength you need to let go of them – for good.

1) Prayer for letting go

Dear God,

At this moment, I let go of all the thoughts and concerns I have over my relationship.

I know that when I let go, I am able to receive.

When my hands are formed into fists, I cannot receive anything.

When I hang onto tight control, and when I close off my heart and my spirit, I cannot receive your blessings.

I pray that you help me let go so that I receive these blessings.

I feel your loving presence around me and within me. Help me to let go every time I feel overwhelmed, so that I may receive your peace.

Help me to let go of this fear so that in fear’s place I receive courage.

I let go of all my relationship problems and challenges in order to receive your guidance.

I trust you. I know I will not fall for You will catch me.

I believe in the voice inside of me.

Help me not to struggle but to surrender my hardships to you.

I gladly receive this gift of letting go so that you may lead me and guide me.

Amen.

2) Prayer for letting go and understanding what happened

Dear Heavenly Father,

I can hardly believe that You brought us together for no reason. Everything seemed perfect, my partner seemed perfect.

How can this happen? How can I find the strength to move on? I don’t understand, God.

What are You trying to teach me? Please make everything clearer to me. If You want me to move on and let go, please help me do it.

My heart is crying out to You, Jesus. Give me the wisdom and strength to move on from this chapter in my life.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

3) Prayer to understand your partner

Heavenly Father,

I admit I do not understand my partner’s needs. I am clueless and I don’t know how to fix our problems.

Please open my eyes so I can see why they act the way they do. And please help me to understand my own motivations so that I know when I am in the wrong.

Lord, grant us both a greater understanding of one another. Help us take away the notions and assumptions that keep us from truly communicating.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.

4) Prayer to heal from a broken relationship

Dear Lord,

I offer you this prayer to help me with my relationship situation. Please take away all the pain I am feeling in my heart.

Instead, fill it with love, joy, patience, and understanding.

Make our complicated relationship no longer hurt us both.

Bless me and my partner, so that we may live a happy life, even though we are no longer together.

Thank you Lord for hearing my prayer.

I love you. Amen.

5) Prayer to heal the heart

Dear God,

I ask that you please heal my broken heart for it has endured a lot of struggles in the past.

Please bless me with the wisdom to take the knowledge of what I’ve done wrong and use it to make things better in the future.

Lord, guide me as I work to improve myself so that I may fully heal my heart.

In Christ’s Name, Amen.

6) Prayer to move on from the past

Lord, I kneel before You and pray that You would help me to let go of all the guilt and disappointments that seem to be filling my heart and mind.

Fill my hurting soul with Your love and peace.

Fill the emptiness and pain that have broken my heart.

Lord, You know what I am going through this time. Help me so I can take every bad thought and hand it over to You as it rears up in my mind.

Help me to replace them with words of Scripture that tell of Your might and power.

Lord, You have told us to think about what is holy and good. I pray that You would help me to turn the eyes of my heart upon Jesus every time I feel this immense pain.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

7) Prayer to forgive

Heavenly Father, please forgive me of my sins—especially those I have committed against my partner.

And just as you are willing to forgive me, help me to forgive my partner, as well.

Help me to let go of the pain. Help me to let go of my desire to seek revenge.

Let the cycle of retribution stop. Instead, help me fill my life with forgiveness and love.

Lord, give me the strength to find peace and let go.

In Christ’s name, Amen.

8) Prayer for peace

Lord, my relationship has become difficult.

There is constant fighting and unease. There is so much stress and resentment.

I feel that I have nowhere to turn but to you, Lord.

Please let there be peace between my partner and me, even though we have parted ways.

Grant us the kind of peace that only you can give, Lord.

Drain away all the resentment and anger that have built up between us. Help us to live a peaceful life even if our relationship is already over.

Thank you, dear Father. Amen.

9) Prayer of realization

Dear Heavenly Father,

I praise Your name because when I was down, You were with me.

I see now that You meant us to only be together for some time because marriage wouldn’t have been good for us.

Thank You for showing me that now, Lord, rather than later on. Though I still feel so much pain, I know You will give me the strength to move on.

I thank You for all the love and understanding you have given me.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

10) Prayer of revelation

Lord, I take comfort in the fact that you know all things.

My relationship is struggling, and I don’t know what to do. Please reveal to me the things that we can do to make things better.

I know it’s time to end the relationship, so please help me accept this. Open my eyes to any problems that I have been blind to, and please give me the chance to escape them.

If my partner is hiding something, help reveal it so that I can make the right decision, no matter how painful it may be.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

11) Prayer for a lost relationship opportunity

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray that You help me move on from this lost relationship opportunity. Though it appeared ideal, I understand you know what’s best for me, Lord.

Help me to accept this turnout and no longer mourn this loss.

Lord, I trust that You have better relationship opportunities for the future. Please help me understand why this relationship was not meant to be.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

12) Prayer to deal with a broken marriage

Dear Lord,

You know what path I am on right now and that I am in agony. I am having disharmony in my married life. You have instituted marriage for you know that it is not good for man to be alone.

I believe that You have given me this person to love for the rest of my days.

The Bible has taught me that marriages are not quickly broken. Come and be with us, Lord, for only You can make our broken hearts understand each other.

You are the King of Peace and I know You can change any painful situation in my life.

Father, I know whatever happens is your will.

I implore you to hear me, dear God, to make us understand each other and achieve unity in our relationship.

Help me to understand my partner’s needs and feelings.

Grant me wisdom that I may know how to deal with this unlikely situation so we both can rebuild our lives.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, O Lord. Amen.

13) A woman’s prayer for a painful breakup

Dear Lord,

I thought he was the one. I thought we would spend our entire lives together. Now I am broken and hurt.

How can I move on, Lord? How can I let go? It feels impossible right now. I didn’t know this breakup could hurt this much.

I need Your help to let go, Lord.  Please help me to move on and realize the goodness in all of this.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

14) A man’s prayer for a broken relationship

Dear Heavenly Father,

I hurt deep inside and I don’t know how to move on. I miss her and am not sure how I’ll live without her.

Help me to overcome this pain. Help me to let go. I can’t do this with You, Lord.

Give me the strength – as well as the faith that You have someone else for me.

I continue to trust in you even amid this soul-crushing pain.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

15) Prayer to transform your life

Lord, please help me bear love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control. Help me to be transformed by these qualities.

God, please give me the strength to make these qualities permanent. Let them be on my mind at all times, influencing all that I do so that I may finally heal from my past relationship.

Lord, I realize that I must take ownership of my life and make changes so that the past doesn’t happen once again. Please help me to change my bad habits, especially those that led my relationship to fail.

I love you, God. Amen.

16) Prayer for a new chapter in life

Dear Heavenly Father,

Please be with me as I move on from my old relationship to the new one. The joy, memories, and hardships of my last relationship are now behind me.

Help me to leave them there, Lord, and not carry them with me into this new relationship.

Help me to let go of all anger and pain and see all people as the blessing they truly are.

Thank You, Lord, for this opportunity to begin a new chapter of love in my life.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

17) Prayer for growth

God, I pray that you help me learn from what happened in my life.

My relationship struggled, and now my partner and I have parted ways.

And while it hurts, let us not forget our struggles especially as we move past them, for we may end up repeating them in the future.

I ask that you help us gain wisdom from what happened, so we can use that wisdom to improve our next relationship.

Please help us make something beautiful out of this suffering.

Amen.

18) Prayer of thanks

Dear Heavenly Father,

I thank You for protecting me during our relationship. Thank You for not letting me get hurt.

Please help me to move on so that I am not pulled back into my previous relationship.

We are not good for each other and I understand that my partner was not good for me.

I need to focus on You during this season, Lord.

Help my time with You to be fulfilling so that I might not go looking for it somewhere else.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

19) Prayer for a lost partner and ‘friend’

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray that You will help me as I determine how to move on from the friendship I lose with this relationship.

While we have gotten along well, I know that things don’t always work out and people like us eventually drift apart.

I pray that You would bless them as they move on from this relationship and find a new partner who’ll also be their friend.

Help me to move on and find a new partner and friend, too.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
