12) Why do I dream about my parents?
Having dreams about our parents can be a sign that we are going through something similar that they went through so our subconscious mind is trying to give us advice and support.
It could also be a sign that you are going through a life transition and your parents have some opinions on that.
Imagine this:
Someone is about to go through a big transition in their life (moving, launching a new business, getting married, having children) and it hits them that they have not told their parents about it.
Then they have a bad dream that their parents were upset with them. This could be their subconscious mind warning them to tell the parents so they can get more support.
So if you dream of your parents you need to take stock of the situation because it may be showing you something about your life now or in the near future.
Is my dream trying to tell me something?
Is it just a coincidence that you dreamed about someone or is your dream trying to tell you something?
No. Dreams are trying to tell you something and no coincidence is involved. Most of the time they come from your subconscious mind and it may be trying to warn you, remind you of something or give you advice.
If you have been having the same dream over and over again, then this means that your subconscious mind is constantly worried about something and it’s important for you to figure out what that is before taking actions.
I have tried many times not believing my dreams because I was not sure what they were trying to tell me but once I realized I was going through emotional turbulence from past relationships or events, then the dreams made more sense than before.
Now, for those of you who are curious about whether you can control your dreams, let’s talk about that in the section below.
Can you control your dream?
The answer is YES. It is possible to take control of your dreams and a way to do that is by having lucid dreams, which is the ability to know that you are dreaming and be able to interact with your dream. Sounds fun right?
Imagine being able to go to any place on the planet, meet anyone and do anything.
From flying in the air, diving in the ocean like a fish, and traveling to the other side of the world.
Being free to dream as you want and then come back to reality with a great feeling. How amazing would it be?
You can do all this with lucid dreaming.
The science behind lucid dreaming
Lucid dreaming is a method of consciously controlling dreams.
Here’s an interesting fact, lucid dreams can be induced in the lab, which means that it is a state of mind that can be controlled.
During a lucid dream experiment, researchers were able to deliver electrical impulses to the brain in order to trigger conscious awareness.
These signals caused people to dream they were writing with their left hand while they actually used their right hand while they were dreaming.
I was able to control my dreams when I was 9-10 years old. I still remember the joy and the excitement when I had controlling dreams. Running with zebras in Savanna. Eating unlimited sweets. Those feelings were intensely joyful and hard to forget.
You can achieve this by using the following method and it was used by Arnold Schwarzenegger as well.
To achieve lucid dreaming
1) Spend five minutes creating an image in your mind that represents relaxation to you
This can be a beautiful beach, or relaxing in your room with a glass of wine.
Then listen to some relaxing music while falling asleep until your body feels completely relaxed. This will create the right conditions for lucid dreaming .
2) Repeat a mantra in your head as you fall asleep
Try repeating a simple statement or a phrase of what you want to dream while imagining some mental image to it as you’re falling asleep.
Examples: “I’m in Hogwarts” or “I’m a mermaid.”
Repeat the statement as you fall asleep to reinforce the idea of what you want to dream about.
The repetition of your mantra should continue throughout sleep and become increasingly louder as you fall asleep and transition into REM sleep (the phase in which most dreams occur).
Keep repeating your mantra without drifting off to sleep but remaining in a relaxed state of mind. This may take some time, so just be patient and stay relaxed.
If you drift off to sleep before reaching this state, simply wake yourself up and go back over step one again until you finally reach the desired level of relaxation .
3) Try to focus on the present, and that moment in time.
This will help you remember what is happening at this very moment.
So whenever a thought comes to your mind, just let it fly out of your mind and focus on the present moment.
If you practice being in the present regularly, your mind will tell you when you are dreaming or when you are awake.
4) When you are aware that you’re dreaming, notice what is going on around you in your dreams
This will help you differentiate between a real life experience and a dream.
As you become lucid within your dream, take time to examine the environment and other thoughts to remind yourself that you are dreaming.
you can use your mind to control the dream, like deciding to fly or walk through a door.
In order to transition into a lucid dream, you need to think about what you’d like to do in your dream and make the decision.
You can decide whether you want this scenario in your dreams and how it would feel if it were real.
Try imagining that you are actually back in Hogwarts, or whatever wonderful place or experience that you have imagined.
Just try imagining the feeling and make a wish for your dream, like: “I’m dreaming” or “I wish I could be making these actions (flights with zebras, climbing on things/boulders, etc.)
Whenever you notice something strange, don’t try to rationalize it but just enjoy the dream.
The more you analyze what is happening, the more awake you become and the harder it will be to control your dreams.
So, just let go and enjoy every moment of your dream.
5) Test the reality of your world by interacting with it or using your five senses
Since you are lucid, you can interact with your dream world using all five of your senses, as well as your emotions.
For example, if you were dreaming about eating some delicious ice cream, you could taste it or if you were dreaming about swimming in an ocean, you could feel the water on your skin and smell the salty and sandy air.
You can also focus on what’s going on around you. For instance, imagine a scene from a movie in which a car goes flying past and notice how the sound of it matches up with what’s happening.
6) Keep a dream journal. The more you write down the more control you have over your dreams
Try and get into a habit of writing down your dreams in great detail immediately after waking up, while they are still fresh in your mind.
This way your subconscious mind will be aware that it is important so it will remember the dream and give you clues about what to look for when analyzing it later on.
Give these methods a try! You might surprise yourself and find yourself having lucid dreams more often.
Benefits of lucid dreaming
• It helps you to overcome nightmares
Lucid dreaming can be used to improve the quality of life of many people.
For example, it can help many people to overcome nightmares, because lucid dreaming can change the dream.
• It helps you to be more creative
It can help you be more creative and solve problems more effectively.
Also, you will be able to achieve anything as everything is possible in dreams.
• It helps you to realize the world around you
If you have been lucid dreaming since childhood, it can help you to realize the world around you. For example, if you have been a lucid dreamer since childhood, then you will start to understand that everyone has dreams that they can only remember when they wake up.
• It helps you to connect to yourself on a deeper level
Your emotions and trust in yourself may also grow stronger since it will give validity to everything else that happens to you.
• It helps with depression
Lucid dreams can help with depression. According to research done by Harvard psychologist Dr Stephen Laberge, people who are depressed often have nightmares or experience fragmented sleep or insomnia.
These experiences can lead to a feeling of being trapped within the dream. Staying in a lucid dream for longer periods of time allows the person to regain control of their sleep and become aware that they are dreaming.
• It helps with anxiety
Lucid dreams also help with anxiety. People who suffer from anxiety often experience nightmares or are plagued by night terrors.
Through lucid dreaming, people can learn to communicate with their anxiety, reducing stress and decreasing anxiety significantly.
• It heals body disorders
We’re not through yet, in addition to just escaping in dreams by helping the body sleep better, lucid dreaming has many other benefits such as improving health and healing body disorders including heart disease and cancer, as well as aiding meditation or any other higher level thinking process.
You know what else? An ability to lucid dream is something that has been dreamed about for many centuries and was originally known as “The Secret Art”.
The secret art
So how does it work?
Every part of our body works subconsciously, so through a lucid dream we help the body reset its programming to better control itself.
This means that rather than being suppressed by the subconscious, we are actually helping it to be stronger.
We can use lucid dreaming to undo the bad programming done while in deep sleep and get the body to function better and either heal itself or stay healthier.
It’s pretty simple when you think about it, the subconscious programming is done in deep sleep, which is something that happens when we are unaware. Therefore, our body will not be able to change its own programming while we are awake.
However, it usually can’t function at full strength while we’re asleep either, thus the reason why so many people struggle with health problems and body disorders.
In a lucid dream state however, our body can utilize its full potential while being aware of everything around it.
By now you will have realized that lucid dreaming is a very powerful tool for personal growth, and the more you use it, the better you will get at controlling your dreams and what happens to you within them.
So, if you find yourself struggling to have lucid dreams or they feel elusive, try out some of these techniques and see what happens.
And don’t forget that by learning how to control your dreams we are also practicing some great meditation techniques as well!
Last but not least, let me remind you again that the meaning of your dream about someone depends on the situation where you are when you are dreaming.
Dreaming about someone and things that have always happened can be an omen of things to come, but dreaming about someone and things that have not happened yet can also signify new beginnings.
So, take your time to reflect on your dreams and your current situation in life. You might be surprised when you realize the interpretations that you can find in your own mind.
