30+ surprising meanings of colors while meditating

While you meditate – especially as a beginner – you might be surprised to see colors appearing out of nowhere.

When I first started seeing colors, I thought I was experiencing some sort of awakening. And, in a way, I was.

I was moving into a deeper state of concentration that allowed me to become aware of something other than my body and my breathing.

Beautiful colors were coming into my awareness and then fading away, leaving me in a state I was unfamiliar with.

Curious to understand why this was happening to me, I began researching the meanings behind the colors I was seeing…

And what I learned was nothing short of amazing.

Read on to find out more!

What do colors mean during meditation?

Colors can be a big part of your meditation practice. You may see colors as

  • Representations of the various chakras in your energy body.
  • Or the energy centers in your physical body.
  • Hints at spiritual growth or evolutionary change.
  • Signs of healing.

But, you can also purposely use colors during meditation to achieve specific results.

“Just meditating on a particular color can create profound shifts in emotional and mental states, which in turn creates biochemical processes that enhance health and well-being,” says Sheri-Therese Bartle in her book, Spiritual Guide to the Meaning of Colours.

In both cases, though, you first need to know more about the meaning behind the colors to understand why you see them and how to use them while meditating to achieve the desired outcome.

Let’s begin with the 7 colors corresponding to your main chakras.

The surprising meanings of the 7 colors associated with your chakras while meditating

1) Red – Root chakra

The root chakra is “responsible for our survival instincts, security, shelter, food, fight or flight

response, physical birth,” says Harish Johari, a distinguished North Indian author, in his book Chakras: Energy Centers of Transformation.

Its corresponding color is red and if you see it while meditating, it could mean this:

“Red represents the will to achieve, energy, intensity, and struggle. It is also appetite, desire, and reproduction. It is life in the “now.” – according to Tom DeLiso.

In other words, seeing red could denote that you are reaching new heights in your life. Your desire to reach new heights is so strong that you’re willing to go through the struggle that comes with it.

It may also mean that you’re stable and rooted in your life. You have a sense of accomplishment and are on top of things.

However, if you’re fighting with laziness, narcissism, and resentment and you worry too much, then seeing red might indicate an imbalance in your root chakra.

How to use red while meditating?

Ted Andrews, the author of How to heal with color, advises you to focus on this color if you want to strengthen your physical energy, as well as your power of will.

“Red can also be used to raise the body’s temperature and to energize the blood, which helps in treating poor circulation. Red stimulates deeper passions, such as sex and love, hatred and revenge, and courage,” he adds.

2) Orange – Sacral chakra

According to Johari, the sacral chakra is related to “procreation, inter-relating with family, relationships, sexual fantasies, inspiration to create.”

The color associated with the sacral chakra is orange.

If you see it while meditating, it might mean your creative energy is expanding. In addition, it might be an indication that you have the needed power to accomplish your goals – relationship-wise.

On a deeper level, orange is also associated with attaining enlightened states. Simply put, it might mean that you’re on the right track to attaining enlightenment.

If, on the other hand, you feel frustrated, have relationship problems, or believe that you can’t find true love and happiness, then it could mean your sacral chakra is out of balance.

How to use orange while meditating?

Orange can assist you in bringing your emotions into check. This color especially promotes joy and wisdom.

Moreover, using it can help you balance your digestive system and eliminate negativity from your body.

3) Yellow – Solar Plexus chakra

The solar plexus chakra is the center of your personal power and self-control. In addition, it is also responsible for intellect, opinions, as well as fears and anxieties about self-worth.

Its color is yellow and if you see it while meditating, it might mean this:

“The color yellow represents joy, energy, intellectual awareness, creativity, and a synthesis of new ideas and optimism”, says Bartle.

It also represents hope, so if you’re joyous and optimistic, then seeing yellow might mean that you’re on the right track.

On the other hand, if you find yourself struggling with insomnia and an unhealthy desire to compete with others, then it could be an indication that your solar plexus chakra is out of balance.

How to use yellow while meditating?

Yellow is the color of optimism, positivity, and mental clarity. It also stimulates both your physical and emotional health.

For example, it encourages endurance and strength. In addition, it can help you heal from depression and self-doubt, notes Andrews.

4) Green – Heart chakra

The heart chakra is related to emotions, balanced behavior, and unconditional love. It is also responsible for compassion, empathy, artistic expression, and imagination.

Its color is green.

If you see it while meditating, it might mean you have a positive attitude toward your lifestyle, your family life is thriving and your emotional health is strong. You see the world as a beautiful place to live in and you feel at peace with yourself and with others.

On the other hand, if you find yourself feeling unloved and your family life isn’t as strong as it should be, then this is an indication that there is an imbalance in your heart chakra.

How to use green while meditating?

This is a good color to use when you want to make a decision. Its energy can help you find the balance that’s been missing in your life.

If you’re feeling unappreciated, it can also assist you in letting go of negativity and enhancing communication. It is helpful in accepting criticism, too.

5) Blue – Throat chakra

Here’s what Johari has to say about the throat chakra:

The throat chakra is “responsible for speech, communication, the voice of the heart, growth through expression, discrimination, acceptance, forgiveness.”

The color of this chakra is blue and if you see it while meditating, it might mean something related to “the energy of pacification, self-protection, sweetness, and tenderness, and of loyalty”, says Tom DeLiso.

To put it simply, it might mean that you’re able and willing, to communicate your feelings freely and openly.

On the other hand, if you feel stressed about something or are worried about being rejected, then this may indicate an imbalance in your throat chakra.

How to use blue while meditating?

Blue can assist you in calming and centering yourself. It can also help you dissolve stress and negative emotions.

In addition, it can stimulate the kidneys and the adrenal glands.

6) Indigo – Third eye chakra

The third eye chakra is related to intuition, creativity, and visual imagery. It also represents imagination, perception, psychic ability, and wisdom.

Its color is indigo and if you see it while meditating, here’s what it means:

“Purple or indigo in a dream or meditation signals some kind of psychic power or ability or some kind of psychic force,” notes DeLiso.

In other words, it can mean that you’re intuitive or have psychic abilities. It can also mean that you have the ability to access your creative potential.

On the other hand, if you are closed to the ideas of others and make decisions based on ego, then this is an indication that there’s a blockage in your third eye chakra.

How to use indigo while meditating?

This color is associated with the third eye chakra and helps in connecting with higher spiritual helpers and higher self.

“It can awaken devotion and intuition,” says Andrews, so if you focus on it, you can get answers to your questions and it can assist you in achieving wisdom and enlightenment.

7) Violet – Crown chakra

The crown chakra is associated with your soul, enlightenment, and spirituality.

The color of the crown chakra is violet and if it is seen while you are meditating, it might mean that you can understand the mystical wisdom of the universe.

You see life in a whole new light – and your belief system seems to be validated.

It also indicates that you have a very spiritual relationship with God or a higher power, notes Bartle.

Your relationships with others are also very spiritual and you seem to be constantly connected to a higher power.

On the other hand, if you find yourself preoccupied with materialistic things, this indicates that your crown chakra is out of balance.

How to use violet while meditating?

This color is good for balancing your spiritual side, especially if you are having difficulties connecting with God or a higher power. When you focus on it, it can open the doors of perception.

It can also assist you in developing your psychic gifts such as clairvoyance and clairaudience.

So, these are the 7 colors that may appear to you while you meditate and are connected to your chakras. However, you might also see or purposely use numerous other colors to enhance your meditation.

More surprising meanings of colors while meditating

While meditating you also might have seen colors that have nothing to do with your chakras.

In my case, the first color I consciously saw while meditating was pink. I wasn’t sure why I saw it or what it meant until I discovered this color has a lot of meanings- just like many other colors.

So, let’s take them one by one.

8) Pink – universal love

“Pink is the color that represents universal love. It stands for friendship, romance, purity, and compassion. It is also representative of beginning a new relationship, raising energy and healing,” notes Bartle.

And you know what?

She is right!

Well, at least in my case. When I saw this color while meditating, it was the beginning of a new relationship for me – I was actually focusing on balancing my emotions without the use of colors.

But, as a skeptic, I looked for confirmation elsewhere, and here is what I found:

“In meditation, it represents self-love, also resurrection. The color of flesh, of sensuality and emotion, romantic love, and supportive love.”

So, you can use pink to awaken “compassion, love, and purity” in yourself, says Andrews.

9) White – energy and enlightenment

Here’s how DeLiso describes the meaning of the color white while meditating:

“Truth of the highest order. Enlightenment. Energy in its most pure form. Divinity.”

Simply put, if you see white while meditating, it could indicate that you are aware of the spiritual world and are in alignment with the divine.

You can use this color to open up your mental barriers, develop your ability to communicate with your higher self, and cleanse your aura.

Andrews also recommends purposely focusing on or using white at the beginning and the end of any healing session.

10) Gold – enlightenment and wealth

Are you seeing the color gold when you meditate?

If so, then you need to know this:

“Divinity transforming lower energy to upper energy. Spiritual power in all aspects operating for the greater good.”

What does this mean?

It means that if you see this color while meditating, it can indicate that your consciousness is being uplifted and transformed.

Also, it can help you in reaching higher levels of enlightenment and teach you how to use this energy for yourself and for the benefit of others – if you decide to work with it.

To do so, you can focus on gold or you can use it as a background color for your guided meditations.

11) Grey – excessive energy being burnt out

If grey is the color you see during meditation, then you must know that is commonly associated with sadness, and negative thoughts, but also with excessive energy being burnt out.

It can also indicate that you are staying in one place too long, says Andrew.

You might not know where to go or what to do next. To handle this situation, you’ll need to re-evaluate your life choices and gather more information.

If it’s still not enough, then you might need to gather more strength by working on balancing your chakras.

12) Black – not a negative color

The surprising meaning of black while meditating is this: it’s not a negative color!

In fact, DeLiso says that “a velvet black light opens up the Aura so that it can accept higher colors.”

In other words, you can use this color to banish negative feelings.

It is also a beneficial color to meditate with in case you need to ground yourself or calm yourself.

A protective color as well, black activates the magnetic energies of the body. However, too much black can make you feel uncomfortable and can block your natural flow of energy.

If you feel that this color persists during meditation and you don’t feel comfortable with it, then try to focus on white.

Why?

Well, white is at the opposite end of the spectrum and it can balance the blackness.

13) Lemon – vitalizing and stimulating

Did you know that you can use the color lemon to heal a lot of physical and emotional ailments with the help of meditation?

It is a very vitalizing and stimulating color, and it assists in clearing your mind. What’s more, it helps to regulate and balance your emotions.

It can also encourage you to take action in creative and practical ways, which will lead you to manifest your dreams.

How so?

Well, lemon is basically yellow with a tint of green, which means that it’s a combination of the energies of the heart chakra and solar plexus chakra.

In other words, this color is a combination of emotions, intellect, and action. It is perfect for manifesting your dreams on all three levels: physical, emotional, and spiritual.

14) Brown – grounding, calming and centering

Brown is a common color used in meditation as well.

In fact, it can help you eliminate indecisiveness and it helps neutralize negative energy.

Brown is a grounding color and it helps to bring down your spiritual vibrations, which can help reduce anxiety, create balance, and build strong energy.

Brown in meditation is also very calming and centering.

It will also arouse wisdom and deep insight into the nature of reality as well as your role in it. This will improve your clarity of thought and open up more possibilities for you.

What’s the meaning of silver during meditation?

As it turns out, this color amplifies the effects of other colors when used in meditation.

So if you are using colors on their own and silver appears, it can increase the effects of that color.

Bartle also adds that “the color silver stands for a connection to the stars, the moon, and space.”

What does this mean?

It means that if you happen to see silver while meditating, it can point out a connection you have with the astral world. It can help you channel angelic and cosmic energies, which will add more power to your meditation.
