People can be successful in various areas, ways and forms.
But they all have something in common.
There are 3 core skills they all master.
So whatever your goal is and whichever area you want to succeed in, it’s worth knowing these top skills and investing in them.
Here you go!
“Focus is the secret to most people’s success”, according to Richard St. John, who has interviewed more than 1,000 successful people including Bill Gates and Richard Branson. You may know him from one of the most watched Ted Talks ever, “8 Secrets of Success,” which has received more than 10 million views.
“People who concentrate are the ones who become successful at a young age”, he says.
Pick one thing as your focus aim — and before you say “money”, try to come up with something meaningful that you’re truly passionate about. St. John says the many successful people he interviewed over the past 10 years rarely get excited about money as such. It’s their passion that leads to making money, which is a consequence rather than a goal in itself.
Another benefit of picking a focus is that you’ll become a true expert in a specific domain.
In the words of St. John:
“Successful people aren’t great at everything. They are great at one thing and suck at everything else. If you focus on too many things, you won’t be able to spend time on what makes you great.”
A second skill all successful people possess is resourcefulness.
It’s not just anyone saying this — it comes from Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon, who was interviewed by Goalcast.
Starting with packing up books on the floor in the mid-1990s at the start of Amazon, Bezos says the key skill that’s helped him do it all has been resourcefulness: “If there’s a problem, there’s a solution.”
So don’t give up too easily when you encounter problems on your journey to success. Keep your focus and look for solutions. As Bezos puts it:
“Life is full of different risks. And I think that, when you think about the things that you will regret when you’re 80, they’re almost always the things that you did not do.”
3. The ability to learn from your mistakes
Last but not least, the third skill all successful people have in common is their ability to learn from their mistakes.
We often focus on their success, but don’t see the rocky path that has lead to it. People who achieve their goals haven’t managed to do so overnight — they’ve had to overcome many obstacles to get where they are today. They weren’t afraid to take risks and accept the mistakes that go along with, because the lesson lies in the failure.
Adopt this mindset from Will Smith:
“You have to live at the edge of your capabilities. You gotta live where you’re almost certain you’re going to fail!”
That’s where you’ll find true growth and success.
