Lubomir Arsov’s groundbreaking short film IN-SHADOW: A Modern Odyssey is a masterpiece in social commentary that will at once enthrall and disturb you.

His stunning animations are masterfully enhanced by a haunting soundtrack by Sheldon Lisoy to make for a totally engrossing experience.

In only 13 minutes the film depicts a hellish portrait of our modern society. The film was written, directed and produced by Lubomir Arsov who makes skilful use of symbols and metaphors to give a not-so pretty picture of the excesses of capitalism, corruption, the media, sport, our obsession with technology and more.

The inhabitants are all portrayed wearing grotesque masks with disproportionately broad smiles that make them look grotesque false. Underneath those masks total despair is hiding.

Oh, Arsov holds up the mirror to you and me so brilliantly, so defiantly.

Arsov’s short film confronts us with the darkness of so-called civilization; so-called because the underbelly of civilization is not civil at all.

It’s rampant with the powerful exploitation of the masses who live meaningless lives chasing houses, big cars, entertainment and the latest tech gadget, while CEOs receive their coffins filled with money, all the while being depicted as angels holding babies and flowers. In this madness some people literally lose their heads…

Only vaguely admitting the gross unfairness of the world, there’s a conspiracy of silence with some individuals wearing diabolical smiles while others scream silently.

News anchors, politicians, and celebrities are depicted as grotesque caricatures and the world of work takes on the look and feel of a prison as people are held captive by their desires for material things.

To really appreciate Arsov’s remarkable ability to translate complex socio-political truths in symbols and images it’s necessary to watch the film a few times.

His film covers many of society’s ills, from corporations and corruption, the war on drugs, designer babies, the media, entertainment and the sheer agony of daily strive and survival.

It’s really ugly and we are living through it right now.

The film speaks for us, we who conform, who wear masks to fit in, to make the grade, to succeed.

But our masks hide something unspeakable.

Do you know what that is?

“The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.” – C.G. Jung
