26 ways to free your mind and soul in the 21st century

Imagine not only being happy, but also feeling motivated to do the work that you really love.

Imagine living in a world where your body, mind, and soul are freely available to explore anything you want.

The time has come to pay more attention to human emotions and the things that make us tick.

Wouldn’t you agree that we all need a spiritual life that’s free and open?

This article will explore not just one or two ways of attaining this state, but 26 different ways you can free your mind and soul in the 21st century by attending to simple yet powerful life hacks.

Here are 26 ways to free your mind and soul in the 21st century.

1) Put your phone or computer on airplane mode

Think about this for a moment. You can sleep better, and you can wake up with more energy. But how?

Fact is there is nothing as frustrating as having a great dream, and then having to deal with incoming emails because you hit the snooze button five times.

I know you might dread this but deleting social media apps can help better manage your addiction to phones or computers while sleeping or waking up.

By turning off the internet, you can focus on what matters most. One hour of focused work can be better than 5 hours of internet distractions.

And I am not even exaggerating!

It may seem impossible at first but start with a goal of a half hour, then one hour and so forth until you are free from your technological chains.

“Detoxify your thought and be free”

2) Enjoy the sounds of music

Here’s the deal: Music is one of the most powerful and magical wonders in the world.

Listening to music can cause chemical changes in the body and mind, making us feel better and more focused.

One might say that it’s common sense that music relaxes us and helps us sleep.

So, listen to your favorite musical artist, play their songs on repeat, or if you have a CD at hand, listen to that too!

It can also help your overall mental clarity. Adopt a relaxing music playlist for your daily commute to work.

This will help you feel good about your commute, and it’s good for the soul!

Personally, I love to listen to nature sounds.

Nature offers a therapeutic and calming effect on the mind and body.

Whenever I feel stressed or anxious, I put on my headphones, close my eyes, and listen for a few minutes until it feels like I am in another place.

3) Find your true purpose in life

If you want the ultimate way to free yourself in the 21st century, without a doubt it involves removing yourself from the rat race and finding purpose and meaning in your life.

This is something most people only dream of but never achieve – bills, rent, university loans – society doesn’t make it easy to live your true purpose.

And even when you try to better yourself and find your calling in life?

Tthere are far too many fake gurus out there ready to sell you on unrealistic and ineffective solutions.

They told me to meditate, radiate “positive vibrations” and visualize the life of my dreams. They said I’d find the romantic partner I’d always wanted and that prosperity and peace would flow.

It sounded good, but it backfired.

Here’s the crazy thing:

Visualization and positive vibes won’t bring you closer to your dreams, and they can actually drag you backwards into time-wasting, idle fantasy and frustration.

But it’s hard tofind your purpose and free your mind and soul when you’re being hit with so many Instagram influencers and studio gurus who want to convince you that you’re just being negative

You can end up trying so hard and not finding the answers you need that your life and dreams begin to feel hopeless.

You may end up further back than where you started, miserable, alone and angry.

The fact is:

Before you can experience a real change, you need to really know your purpose.

I learned about the power of purpose from watching Ideapod co-founder Justin Brown’s video on the hidden trap of improving yourself

Justin used to be addicted to the self-help industry and New Age gurus just like me. They sold him on visualization and positive thinking. It left him lost and confused.

That’s why he traveled to Brazil to meet the renowned shaman Rudá Iandê, who taught him a life-changing new way to find your purpose and use it to transform your life and everything around you.

After watching the video, I discovered my purpose in life and it’s no exaggeration to say it was a turning point in my life.

I can honestly say that this new way of finding success by finding your purpose actually helped me to break out of the “routine” so many of us find ourselves stuck in.

Not only was I able to free my mind and soul, but I found my passion in life – a double win.

If you’d like to achieve the same, watch the free video here.

4) Try to interpret your dreams

Many people are unaware that they can and should interpret dreams.

Dream interpretation is a great way to see the world differently, gain new insights on your life, and aid in your spiritual growth.

Not only can interpreting dreams help you, but it can also help you understand other people better. Ask yourself:

  • What do your dreams mean?
  • What is your subconscious trying to tell you?

There is no right or wrong answer to this. Every dream is unique and has a different meaning for each person.

To begin interpreting your dreams try writing them down in detail as soon as you wake up from them.

Eventually, you’ll be able to make sense of the meanings and discover where your dreams are trying to guide you.

5) Expose yourself to sunlight

So, check this out. A study from Harvard University proves that people who get regular exposure to sunlight have higher levels of creativity and fewer symptoms when it comes to depression.

Too much technology and too many screens can be harmful to your health in more ways than one.

Luckily, sunlight is one of the most amazing sources for health and wellness. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays accelerate cellular repair, improving overall health.

Sunlight also plays a role in keeping you youthful and vibrant.

Furthermore, according to the University of Michigan, “sunlight strengthens the immune system by improving blood circulation and the chemical environment in your body.”

Visit the sun every once in a while, even if it’s just a little stroll outside. It’s good for your health and it’s good for your soul.

Not only does the sun act as a physical healer, but it also acts as a spiritual healer.

6) Try turning off the TV

After a long day of work or school, you may feel the urge to turn on your favorite television show.

However, watching too much TV can cause brain changes that inhibit the thinking process.

Watching too much television may also lead to sleeping disorders and it can lower your IQ score as you get older.

This is because the amount that TV and movies interfere with the neural connections in the brain, which is where our intellectual functions are developed.

Shockingly, too much television can even lead to depression. A 2007 University of California, Berkeley study found that television can make you feel lonelier.

It’s not just harmful to your physical health; it is just as detrimental to your mental and emotional state of being.

7) Read comics or graphic novels

Did you know that reading comics and graphic novels can help you analyze life and problems in a different way?

This is because you have an opportunity to create characters that reflect your own personality.

In fact, comics are great for keeping a positive outlook.  They’re also great for teaching you new concepts, as well as giving you an appreciation for art and science.

There are several benefits to reading comics, from the creative outlet to the critical thinking, connecting with a new and diverse group of people, and gaining depth on issues of interest.

If you’ve been hesitant, then try reading an anthology or graphic novel for starters.

The truth is that these stories can be relatable, and they offer a great escape from reality and stress.

8) Try mental exercises and games

Mental exercises can help your mind stay alert and focused.  They also stimulate the brain and make you more productive.

“Brain games” engage various areas of the brain and can improve your concentration, build confidence and help you become more organized.

In fact, it only takes 30 minutes for your brain to produce beta waves. These waves create a deep, refreshing sensation that makes you feel more relaxed and alive.

Did you know that beta waves stimulate your brain in much the same way that exercise does? They help to eliminate stress, increase memory and make you more rational.

Try doing something for 30 minutes and see how it affects you.

You may be surprised to learn that mental exercises can have a relaxing effect on your body, mind and soul.

9) Remember who you are and free your mind

One of the best ways to free your mind and soul is to remember who you are, where you come from, and what your purpose is.

By reminding yourself of what fulfills you and makes you happy, it will help you live a better life.

Are you exhausted from trying to always be the best version of yourself, of always trying to be positive?

If so, there’s a reason why: You’ve been sold toxic spirituality.

Don’t feel bad about it though, so many of us have fallen into this trap. Including the shaman Rudá Iandé.

In this incredible free video, Rudá explains how his initial approach to spirituality did more harm than good.

So, what makes Rudá trustworthy?

Well, Rudá is going to give you the tools to find empowerment from within.

Every exercise in the video will put you back in touch with your core self, step by step.

10) Find a space of tranquility in your life

When you find a place where you can be alone with your thoughts and relax, you can create a space of tranquility.

Take time out of your day to find this space, whether it is a few minutes during your lunch break or an hour every night before bedtime.

Simply create a special place of tranquility for yourself where you can go and feel peaceful, relaxed, or comfortable if you are having trouble relaxing or feeling happy at any time.

The secret: You can create any space that you want.

You can decorate it as you choose or use a simple piece of furniture. You can add a nice soft blanket or listen to relaxing music.

It’s a no-brainer. Building a space of tranquility is a great way to connect with yourself in the 21st century.

11) Wash your hands more often to cleanse your energy

Did you know that hand washing is one of the most effective ways to cleanse your energy and make you feel healthy?

You don’t need soap to do this, just a little water and some sort of sponge or washcloth.

The water is supposed to heal you on the inside, not just cleanse the dirt from outside.

Washing your hands is a very simple task that you can do to feel refreshed and renewed.

The hands are the most used part of the body, so they really tend to show signs of wear and tear.

The skin on our hands is the most sensitive and vulnerable part of our bodies so I recommend washing them multiple times throughout the day. Anything that is touching your skin should be cleansed in some way!

12) Make a habit of meditating daily

Meditation improves your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. For many people, meditating is walking and living with an awareness of the present moment.

I’d like to believe that meditation is the greatest gift you can give to your mind and soul.

It’s a way to get in tune with your mental, emotional, and physical energy.

There are so many different ways to meditate.

Try chanting or writing words of encouragement on a piece of paper.

Apart from these, guided imagery meditation is a great way to start with because it doesn’t require you to focus on anything other than your own thoughts and voice.

You can do this lying down in bed, the more relaxed you are, the better it will work.

This is why turning off your phone and putting it on flight mode is ideal for these quick guided imagery meditations.

13) Carry a small notebook with you throughout the day

Sometimes our mind goes off in different directions, and we forget what we’re doing or thinking.

This is why I recommend carrying a small notebook with you throughout the day. I always keep one in my bag.

It’s a quick way to get my creative thoughts down and it helps me remember things I want to do.

You can jot down ideas that come to your mind while you’re working, talking, etc. A small book like a pocket notebook or journal is an easy way to keep track of your thoughts and ideas.

You never know what you may need to write down when inspiration strikes. It’s also an easy way to make yourself stop and think, which will help you unwind.

14) Make a list of everything you’re grateful for

By writing down things that you’re grateful for, you’re connecting with your inner self and feelings of contentment.

This can lower stress levels and make you feel more appreciative of the things in your life.

Once you start, it’s easy to write down the things you’re grateful for. Think about all the people, places, and things that bring you joy and create a list of them.

Think about what you have now and think about what you’ve had in the past.

By doing this, you remind yourself of all the meaningful things in life and you feel more appreciative.

“Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.”

– Henry Ward Beecher

15) Commit only small amounts of time to a task

In today’s busy world people are often forced to multitask more than they should, especially while working.

Don’t feel guilty if you can only dedicate a small amount of time to a task. It’s not your job to do everything perfectly but do work hard on the tasks you commit to achieving.

Don’t hesitate or let procrastination get in the way of the most important things.

Don’t let yourself feel guilty, sit down, and think about why you’re wasting your time.

Think about what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, and why. Set a small amount of time for yourself to focus on a task, and then do the task.

Don’t let yourself feel guilty if it takes more than that amount of time.

It’s better for you to be a little late than to make excuses to waste your time.

16) Make an effort to help others in any way you can

It’s easy to get caught up in your own life and forget that there are other beings who may not be as fortunate as you.

By making an effort to help those around you, you can remind yourself of your goals and dreams.

Do you find yourself wrapped up in negativity and complaining about the things you don’t have? If you do, look for a way to give back and make a difference in someone’s life.

Make sure that you have a well-rounded set of values and goals that help shape your life on the planet in a positive way.

I believe that helping others is one of the greatest gifts you can give to them, and yourself. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

The more we can take care of each other, the more we will have to take care of ourselves when we need it.

17) Remind yourself that everything changes, and nothing is permanent

The faster you accept this, the more quickly you can adapt to change. In our world today, most people are living lives based on fear and doubt.

Constantly living your life in fear will only bring you stress and unhappiness.

All of the things I mentioned above can help relieve some of that stress and increase your happiness.

Sadly, so many people are afraid to try new things because they don’t want to risk failure or embarrassment.

In our efforts to be successful in life we can sometimes avoid new experiences, but that can only get in your way of success.

Remember that this is all a part of life. You’re going to make mistakes and fail, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it in the long run.

18) Don’t dwell on the past or on what could have been

Dwelling on the past creates negative patterns that will hold you back from achieving your dreams.

It’s easy to get caught up in how you’ve failed, or how something didn’t work out. But this doesn’t give you any positive outcomes.

Instead, look back and see what you’ve learned. Find ways you can use those experiences and apply them to your life.

Let go of all the negative things that happened in the past. You’re not stuck there anymore, so don’t live in the past.

Focus on how you can use the things that happened to make you better. Then you can move on with your life and create positive patterns.

Don’t let yourself feel stuck.

19) Stop sweating the small stuff

By focusing on the small things, you’re letting the big things go by unnoticed.

It’s easy to get caught up in the little things that don’t really matter and miss out on the bigger picture.

Sometimes we spend a lot of time thinking about things that don’t really matter. Or we focus on the next big thing and miss out on the little things that could help us make it happen.

You don’t need to worry about everything that happens each day. It’s important to keep a good balance of what you think about.

Ask yourself:

  • What’s important to you?
  • Why are you doing it?
  • How can you achieve it?

Work towards the big things in life, because a small amount of effort will lead to a bigger outcome.

20) Trust yourself, and find others who trust you as well

Here is a simple test to see if you are being honest with yourself: why would someone else believe in your dreams?

If your honest answer is something like ” I don’t know ” then that’s a sign that it’s time to learn more about your dreams and vision for the future.

If you don’t trust people, it’s easy to feel like you’re all alone. Then you might start to doubt your abilities and make excuses for why something can’t be done.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Find people who will be honest and supportive of you. That’s a place where you can find courage, strength, and the motivation to achieve your goals.

21) Do something every day that you look forward to

Everyone needs something to look forward to in their life. A plan or goal is not enough to keep you going when it’s difficult.

Create something you look forward to, and make sure it’s something that gives and improves your life.

The better your life feels the easier it will be to approach every day with a positive attitude. The more positive energy you use, the more positive energy you attract.

Find out what you are passionate about and create a list.

While your list may grow into hundreds, breaking it up into small lists helps remind you of all the things you truly want to accomplish in your lifetime.

22) Go on walks or hikes in nature whenever possible

“There are no lines in nature, only areas of color, one against another.”

– Edouard Manet

Nature heals the mind and body.

You see, I grew up in the city, and until I first moved away, I didn’t know how much of a difference these walks in nature could make in my life.

The further I walked from my house, the better I felt after getting back home again.

Paying attention to nature can help you feel more relaxed and less stressed.

It will give you more energy, because you are taking in more oxygen from the outside air and allowing yourself to be refreshed by the beautiful scenery around you.

We take too much for granted about our own planet, but once we start paying attention we realize that there is a lot of beauty in our world all around us. The choice is yours.

23) Laugh out loud

When you feel down, just let out a hearty laugh.

Quite simply, when you laugh, you allow those positive feelings to flow through your body more freely whether it’s due to a particular situation or just a conversation with friends and family.

You’ll be able to deal with the problems of life much better if you take the time to let out a good laugh using comedy shows, stand up comedians, or making a joke of your own.

Even better than laughing out loud is laughing inwardly at yourself and your thoughts and actions. After all, it’s your fault if you are in a situation that makes you laugh, right?

Why not laugh at yourself and help release mental stress?

It will improve your general outlook on life and help you to focus more on what’s important.

Laughing out loud can also help release anxiety.

24) Turn to the holistic approach

To get a better outlook on life, nature, and your future you can turn to holistic and natural solutions.

This practice involves using natural herbs, oils, and processes to improve your health and help you through difficult times.

Goals will become more attainable, depression will be easier to overcome, and you’ll find that you have more energy throughout your day.

Natural and holistic remedies aren’t just for people who are sick. In fact, they work well for everyone.

Remarkably, a holistic approach to healing involves a combination of conventional and alternative approaches that are used to treat the whole body and its systems.

Holistic medicine offers you ways to strengthen your immune system, reduce inflammation, increase energy levels, improve digestion, and promote overall well-being.

25) Read a book from time to time

Not only is reading good for your thought process and thinking, but it also helps you relax.

It can increase your self-awareness and help you to see the world in a different way.

Books stimulate your brain, so it will get you thinking in a certain way which is beneficial.

Tip: You may read books on how to do certain things better or on how to grow as an individual or even make yourself more respected.

Crazy as it sounds, a book can help you escape the stress of everyday life.

It can even teach you important lessons that will help you live a better and healthier life. They are also a great way to spend time with your family or friends as another person reads aloud to the group.

I suggest you always keep a small book in your purse or backpack.

Whenever you have a few minutes to spare, pull out the book and turn to a random page.

Page through the pages, starting from the back of the book and working forward until you find a passage that speaks to you.

26) Take time to relax

Your mind and body can only take so much before you need to stop, rest and recharge.

If there was a bad day, then try enjoying some quiet time by yourself.

Spend your time by yourself, not worrying about what other people are doing. Get in touch with your emotions and use them as an opportunity to learn more about yourself.

  • What makes you happy?
  • What do you enjoy doing? What are you passionate about?

Think about what makes you feel good and do those things more often. If you don’t have time to do what you enjoy in your daily life, create an opportunity to do it.

Conclusion

I understand that freeing your mind and soul can be difficult in the 21st century, but it is possible to live a life of greater happiness and fulfillment.

It may require a little change in the way you view your life, but that change in vision can lead to positive shifts in every aspect of your life.

Learn to see life as a journey instead of a race.

“The only cure to all this madness is to dream, far and wide. If possibility doesn’t knock, create a damn door. If the shoe doesn’t fit, don’t make it. If the journey you’re traveling seems too far fetched and wild beyond your imagination; continue on it, great things come to the risk takers. And last but not least, live today; here, right now, you’ll thank your future self for it later.”

– Nikki Rowe
