Why are affirmations helpful?
You might be asking yourself why you’re even doing all of that – what’s in it for you?
“That’s easy!” says Louise Hay, Author of the book: You Can Heal Your Life.
“Affirmations are a way of reprogramming your subconscious mind – the part of you that stores all your beliefs about yourself and the world, as well as all your habits, attitudes, and behaviors. By repeating positive affirmations to yourself over and over again, you’re actually rewiring your brain so that positive thoughts become a part of who you are. Your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between what’s true or not; it just takes in whatever information it can get from its surroundings or from inside itself.”
So, in short, affirmations help you to literally reprogram your subconscious mind so that you can change your life.
To be completely honest with you, I didn’t really believe in affirmations, at first. I thought it was strange to tell yourself positive things all the time – it felt as if I was lying to myself.
But, I did some research and found out that affirmations are scientifically proven to work. It’s a proven fact that if you repeat something, you’re more likely to believe it.
And, the more you repeat something, the more likely it is for your subconscious mind to absorb that information and make it a part of your belief system.
That’s why affirmations can be so powerful!
When you start repeating positive affirmations on a daily basis, your subconscious mind will begin absorbing these new beliefs and make them a part of who you are – literally changing your life.
You might be wondering: “What if I don’t believe what my affirmations say?”
Don’t worry! Just because they’re called “affirmations,” doesn’t mean that they have to feel true right away – but they do need to feel right for you on some level in order for them to work.
So, start by picking one affirmation at a time and try repeating it every day for 2 weeks straight; then pick another affirmation and repeat it every day for 2 weeks straight.
Keep doing this until all of your affirmations feel right – this could take anywhere from 1-3 months or even longer, depending on how long it takes you to change your beliefs about yourself.
Once this happens, all of those negative thoughts, feelings, and habits will start changing – automatically!
Your life will begin changing in amazing ways as well as improving in all areas: health, relationships, work, and more.
So, next time you’re not sure if affirmations will work for you, just remember that they’ve been scientifically proven to work and help millions of people improve their lives in many different ways.
All you have to do is be open-minded and start repeating them regularly for a few months – and you’ll see the results for yourself.
You’ll be amazed at how powerful affirmations can be!
Just imagine, being able to change your life, by simply repeating positive thoughts!
How long should I say affirmations?
You might be wondering how long you should repeat these affirmations to yourself every day.
Well, the truth is, there is no real limit.
You can repeat them to yourself a few times in the mirror as you are getting ready.
Or, you could repeat them while you’re meditating or even while you’re in the shower or driving in your car.
Just make sure that you’re saying them every day, so your subconscious mind can absorb these new beliefs and make them a part of who you are.
You might even want to repeat these affirmations throughout the day just a few times at different times, just to help reinforce them.
You can also say them out loud for maximum impact! This is what I did for the first few months when I started repeating affirmations – and it worked like a charm!
When are affirmations the most helpful?
While you can absolutely use affirmations during your meditation, for example, they can come in really handy at other times during the day, as well.
During mindful practices, you tend to be more grounded anyways, making it quite easy to feel at peace.
The time my affirmations help me the most is actually when I feel really triggered or overwhelmed.
You see, in those moments when I feel close to really losing it, taking a few minutes to repeat these affirmations helps me to really come back to myself, and realize that I am not those thoughts.
I am not my emotions.
I am a calm and peaceful observer of my emotions.
I can choose how to respond to them, rather than letting them control me.
These affirmations help me to use all of the tools I’ve learned in mindfulness practice and take a step back from the situation, so I can respond in a way that’s more healthy and beneficial for me.
They help me to really be at peace with myself, no matter what is going on around me – and that’s exactly what we want!
So, when I get overwhelmed at work, I’d literally use these affirmations to center myself in the moment.
Some more tips to help you with feeling more grounded
Create a grounding routine
Rituals can be a great way to re-center and ground yourself.
Whether it’s lighting a candle, meditating, or doing some yoga poses, you can use these activities to help yourself come back down from your thoughts.
For me personally, having a morning and night routine helps me to ground in the moment.
I know that when I wake up in the morning, I’m going to do my skincare routine and read.
When I lay down at night, I know that I’ll be doing my meditation practice and journaling for 15 minutes before bed.
These rituals help me to come back to myself in the moment – and ultimately connect with who I really am!
Plus, they add a layer of consistency in my life that is sometimes missing during stressful times!
Spend time in nature
Being in nature is a great way to be transformed. You will be naturally drawn back to your center when you’re surrounded by trees or standing at the shore of a river.
You see, there is almost no better place to ground yourself than in nature.
That’s why I try to spend at least an hour a day outside in nature, even if it’s just sitting on my balcony.
Nature has a way of helping you restore yourself and come back to the present moment.
And that’s exactly what we want, right?
So get out there and take some time to enjoy your surroundings!
No matter what you do, don’t forget to be kind and gentle with yourself as you learn how to ground. It’s going to take some time – but once you’re able to master grounding techniques, you’ll feel like a new person!
Exercise
Exercise has a ton of great benefits, and it’s also a great way to get grounded. Find an activity that you enjoy and try to do it at least once per week.
Try to avoid overthinking while you’re exercising and instead, just enjoy the time that you’re spending with yourself.
If you overthink while you’re exercising, you’re less likely to find your center, so enjoy what you’re doing and let the rest happen naturally.
Now: what really helps me personally, is using exercise as a way to really transmute all my heavier emotions.
When I feel something dense, I like to exercise and really let myself feel it all while doing my workout.
Combined with the stress on my muscles and body, the strain really helps me to work with my emotions and let them flow through me.
Try taking a yoga class and really focusing on the movements and breathing of each pose.
You can also try doing some weight lifting and really feeling your body as you lift the weights to build muscle.
I’ve found that focusing on the physical sensations of my body helps me to feel grounded, centered, and more balanced.
Being able to feel my body is a huge part of being present in the moment – so this is a great way to get grounded!
Plus, you will gain a greater sense of body control, which can also help you with feeling grounded.
Meditate
Meditation is a great way to bring yourself back down to a place of calm and balance.
Meditating at least 5 minutes a day is one of the easiest ways to get grounded.
Try out different techniques and see what works best for you.
You can also try meditating with a partner or friend, and then try doing it alone.
See if you find that one way works better than the other – both are great ways to ground yourself!
The key is to not overthink it and just let your mind go naturally into a relaxing state of being.
As you get more comfortable with meditation, you can start using it as an opportunity to explore your emotions as well.
If you’re struggling with something, I recommend sitting down for about 15 minutes, then writing in a journal about all the things that are going on in your life that are making you feel this way.
Focus on your breath
Find a quiet place to sit down and focus on your breath.
This is a great way to slow down your thoughts and focus on your breath.
When you focus on your breath, you are essentially training yourself to be more present.
You will be brought back to the moment by your breath, which is a great way to find your center.
For me personally, my breath is my favorite tool to feel grounded.
Ground yourself with gratitude
Find something to be grateful for in your life. This can be something big, like a friend, or something small, like a delicious cup of coffee.
When you’re feeling ungrounded, gratitude can be a great way to get you back to your positive state.
You can also do this whenever you feel stressed or ungrounded.
At the end of the day, when you’re in bed, grab a notebook and write down 3 things that you’re grateful for that day.
This can be a great way to bring yourself back to a more positive state.
Ask for help when you need it
If you’re feeling ungrounded, it’s OK to ask for help.
Sometimes, we try to handle our issues on our own, but that can make us feel worse in the long run.
Asking for help from friends, loved ones, or professionals can be a great way to get back to your center.
You got this!
With these affirmations and techniques, you will feel grounded in no time!
Make sure you remember to breathe and be present in the moment.
If you feel yourself getting too worked up, take a few deep breaths and relax.
And if you feel like these things aren’t working right away, don’t beat yourself up for it. Instead, really take some more time and be patient with yourself.
When you feel grounded, it will feel great, but it might take some time to get there.
So just be patient and kind with yourself.
You can do it!
