12 biblical meanings of hearing knocking (complete guide)

There could be moments in life where you’re alone in your house or workplace and you hear a knocking sound. Should you be afraid? Is somebody trying to break in? Not necessarily.

Knockings (not because of someone or something) at the door, windows or walls can simply be a way of opening up a new door of faith and knowledge or a new way to look at what is deemed real and unreal.

This article will show you 12 biblical meanings of hearing knocking.

1) Success is coming

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened.”

– Luke 11:9-10

This passage from the Bible teaches that if you seek God and ask Him for His goodness and blessings, He will surely hear your calling and provide you with what you need.

Hearing knocking can be a way of God letting you know that He has heard your call. Expect soon to see the manifestation of what you have desired because a new door of opportunity may be opened in your life.

You may have been waiting or working for an opportunity to present itself, and you may have been praying for it, but God may have already heard you.

2) Look into your spiritual life

“But he said to me, ‘Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near. Let him who does wrong continue to do wrong; let him who is vile continue to be vile; let him who does right continue to do right; let that person be blameless still.”

– Revelations 22:10-11

From this passage, it’s clear that God wants us to be aware of His truths and not just ignore them. If we choose to disregard His messages, we’re going to face obvious consequences in life.

God is always knocking on our door to let us know that He is still alive and well in our lives. If you believe, ignoring God’s presence will cause negative things to happen in your life.

In the passage above, the apostle John was once again reminded of God’s presence, and he was commanded to write down the events he has witnessed.

Failure to heed what we have learned could lead us into a life of ridicule and shame. The passage above is a clear warning that God will not tolerate sin in our lives.

3) Accept Jesus in your heart

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me.”

– Revelations 3:20

Jesus Christ revealed himself to John in a vision. He told him that He has been there for him all along even when he wasn’t aware of it.

He also revealed that He longs to have fellowship with him through this revelation. He continues to knock on his heart’s door and invites Himself in. He is asking permission to come into his heart and having a decent time. He promises that once this occurs, the person’s life will be changed forever.

God wants us to accept His presence in our lives. Otherwise, He remains outside and can’t come in. We must open our door and invite Him into our hearts and minds. We must not just sit and wait for something to happen.

4) You’re given a divine purpose

“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself.”

– John 12:3

One who hears knocking and it is answered by prayer should know that God is present and has chosen them for a divine purpose.

You may be prayerfully waiting for an opportunity to present itself in your life. Right now, you’re probably asking yourself why you’ve never been chosen for any form of leadership or great work as a Christian.

This is the exact time you should expect an opportunity to open up before you. Be patient, because there is a purpose for everything that happens in your life.

Your purpose will be something that makes the most sense and it will be something that you never anticipated when you were born again.

When God knocks on your door, do not ignore Him or remain confused about God’s purposes for your life. If He has chosen you for some great work, He expects you to fulfill your calling.

5) Rest in God’s presence

“So I will come to you as a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you.”

– Revelations 3:3

God has compared Himself to several things in the Bible. Among these are a shepherd, a husband, father and doctor. This passage reveals that God can be compared to a thief too. He comes like a thief to steal you away from your distractions and problems.

Once you start hearing Him knocking on your door, He will continue to arrive at the same time each day.

He will knock again and again until suddenly you realize that there is someone or something there with a divine purpose on your life.

It won’t be just some random person who is wanting to see what he can get out of you. It will be the Lord of all lords, through this someone, who wants to have a relationship with you.

He is coming to view you as His child and He will not leave until you’re ready (literally – untill your heart has opened).

6) You have been disobeying

“Because of the increase of evildoers, the lovingkindness of the Lord has ceased.”

– Lamentations 3:22

When you are not hearing God’s voice and calling, it means that you’re either not listening or there is a problem with your relationship with Him.

God is always knocking to remind us that He hasn’t forgotten about us. He is still there with us and still wants to show us how to live in His light. He is urging us to take the next step in our relationship with Him.

The reason why some people aren’t happy in life is because they’re refusing to hear Himself calling.

The reason why your testimony isn’t as strong as you would want it to be is because you are resisting God’s voice. If you’re not hearing something, the problem may be with you or it may be with Him.

If you’re not being heard, something needs to change in your relationship with God because He is knocking on your door and asking in earnest for a response from you.

Furthermore, this passage from the Bible teaches that when God has already showed us His ways, but we continue in our own and still disobey Him, then He will surely back away from us.

He says that He has already sought us out, but we were not willing to listen. So He is knocking on our door again to give us a second chance. It is never too late to have a right relationship with Him.

7) Confess your sins to God

“I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”

– John 10:9

For the sins of the world to be forgiven, Jesus had to die on the cross.

Jesus was letting us know that He can save us from our sins again. He is a door that goes both in and out. That is what He means when He says “I am the door”.

You know, He desires to let us into heaven by opening a new place for us to walk in through. He wants to set you free from the power of sin and guilt. He wants to bring you back home where you belong.

Your sins in this life may have separated you from God—and the only way to get back is to confess them.

Even if you feel like there is no hope left for you, Jesus will come back again and again until His presence surrounds you.

8) A change in your life is coming

“For the time has come for judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?”

– 1 Peter 4:17

The tension between your soul and your spirit is a sign that something is going wrong. You feel that you’re suffocating and there’s no one who can help you.

This is where God comes in.

He is trying to tell you that He is with you and that He can change your life.

He is knocking on your door because He wants to bring a change in your life. He wants you to be free from all the mental, physical, and spiritual pain.

The only condition for Him to do this is for you to invite Him into your heart.

This passage also says that an event is coming soon. This event will change your life completely. It will leave you with no doubt that Jesus is coming in the future.

This is a message of urgency to prepare your heart and mind for what’s about to happen in the next few years. You have to be ready for God’s coming and you have to be ready for judgment.

So the next time you hear a knocking, do not ignore it. Just answer it with prayer and be ready for something to happen in your life.

9) You’re chosen for a great work

“But I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.”

– Matthew 16:18

These are the last words Jesus said when He was living on earth. This is what He says to help us understand His presence in our lives. When the Son of the Living God says that He will build His church, we should never doubt His words.

God has chosen you to be one of His instruments. He has a great work for you, but you’re not allowed to know what it is yet. We do know that this work will glorify Him and transform your life.

You’ll know by the end of this study who God has chosen for greatness in your life. You will know that it is God’s work in you.

Remember that when you hear a knock, you should stop what you’re doing and listen. He has something He wants to tell you.

You can trust that He is there with a divine purpose in your life. All you have to do is open up your heart and let Him speak to you.

10) God’s plan is bigger than you

“The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying, “Surely I will fill your midst with many nations, and they shall Kenasheth. And you will know that I am the Lord who strikes Phanuach. ”

– Zephaniah 2:8

This passage says that God’s purpose for you is bigger than you can imagine. He has a plan to turn your life around and bring glory to His name. You may feel that God has abandoned you and left you on your own to deal with all your demons. But God is not abandoning you.

When you hear the knock, know that He is with you and He wants to take charge of the situation, He has come to make His presence known in your life again. He is calling for action from you because He sees it necessary for the transformation of your life.

The Lord wants to fill your life with many nations. This is a message of hope because you will know that your life is no longer empty.

You will have companions to live with and share your inner struggles, you will be able to enjoy things that you could never dream of before, and God will be glorified in all the ways He promised.

All this glory is because of His coming into your life.

11) Just be still and listen

“Be quiet, and do not let your heart be troubled. For the LORD has spoken.”

– Isaiah 42:7

This passage teaches that God is with you and He wants to offer you peace. He wants to silence all your worries, fears and worries.

He came to show Himself worthy of worship as the only true God because He alone is able to take away our fears of death and sin. When the Lord is knocking on our door, all we have to do is open up to Him.

He wants to bring His presence everywhere, He wants to transform your heart and let you experience His glory. He wants you to be still before Him and listen because He has something important to say His creation.

You may be in the middle of a struggle right now, but God is here with you to comfort you and lead you through your pain.

Just listen to the knock and then let Him lead you through all the trials you’re going through. He will bring peace to your heart and peace to your mind.

The Lord is not just here for your salvation, He is here to show Himself worthy of worship and glory. Don’t let the world fool you into thinking that their message of deliverance is greater than His.

There was a knock on my front door the other day and I was able to respond in spite of the pain I was experiencing at that moment in time.

12) It may be from a spirit

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

– 1 John 4:1

That passage warns us that we should not believe every spirit. This can be a very powerful warning because God wants us to remember that many false prophets have come on the earth. The Holy Spirit is the only true and living God and Jesus is His Son.

We have to listen carefully to what the Spirit says as we don’t want to be deceived by false prophets.

When a spirit announces something to you, it may be from someone who is not of God. You may be tempted to believe them because of their holiness and power, but your life will take a downward spiral if you follow what they say..

The Holy Spirit always wants to bring glory and honor to God. He wants to preach His word and glorify Him as the only true God.

This is why you should never believe everything a spirit says, because not all spirits are good. Some of them may want you in hell since they don’t want you to be saved. They don’t want you getting close to God as they’re scared they’ll lose their followers if you get saved.

When you hear 3 knocks

The Bible says that 3 knocks are the Holy Trinity – God, His Son, and the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit will always want you to ask Jesus into your life. He will ask you to give your life to God and accept Him into your heart as the only way of salvation.

Don’t let any spirit discourage you from accepting Jesus as the only living God and His Son, Jesus Christ.

There are 3 types of people who hear these three knocks on their life:

  • The righteous, those who are punished in hell;
  • the wicked, those under God’s judgment; and
  • the believers, those with God in their life.

Now, take a look into your life and see who you belong. Are you a believer who hears three knocks?

Or are you the wicked who hears three knocks from evil?

Final words

Hearing knocking sounds on your doors could be a message from God. He is calling you to come into His presence and realize His purpose for your life.

It’s normal to feel skeptical about those knocks on your door if you’ve been brought up to believe that God is not real.

When you hear knocking, it’s important that you understand the meaning behind it.

So think about your life, where you are now at this moment and where you want to be.

Thank God for knocking on your door today. No matter what is going on in your life, know that He is here to help you. Let Him transform your life and make it the best it can be.
