10 biblical meanings of dreaming about your ex (complete list)

Dreams can be powerful, but sometimes difficult to interpret. They often leave us feeling confused, anxious, or even scared, especially if the subject matter is personal.

If you’re a Christian, or if you’re interested in Christianity, you may be wondering what the Bible has to say about your dreams.

While there are many biblical interpretations of dreaming about your ex, each one has a different message for you depending on your situation.

Here are 10 of the most common biblical meanings of dreaming about your ex:

1) Dreaming of your ex is your way of processing the end of the relationship

Breakups are hard, no matter how amicable they may be. It’s only natural that you would dream about your ex-partner during this time.

The biblical meaning of dreaming of your ex in this context is that it’s your way of processing the end of the relationship.

You see, going through breakups is a lot like grieving. You have to go through the stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

And just like grief, it’s important to allow yourself time to process your feelings. This doesn’t mean that you should dwell on your ex or try to get back together with them.

As the passage in 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

Don’t be afraid to process your feelings and give yourself time to grieve the loss of the relationship. Keep in mind that this process is necessary in order to move on.

Just know that God is with you, and He will give you the strength to get through this tough time.

2) You’re unhappy with how things ended with your ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend

Processing your, at times, can end up in your dreams. Your subconscious might be working through the hurt, pain, and anger that you feel from past mistakes, and trying to come to terms with what happened.

You may have unresolved issues or feel like you didn’t get closure. Perhaps there’s something you never got a chance to say to your ex or something you’re still trying to figure out.

A Bible passage may help you if you’re struggling with this interpretation. In 2 Corinthians 5:7, it says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

This means that even though you can’t see things clearly and are struggling with how things ended with your ex,

God’s plan for you is still intact. He will help guide your steps and keep you safe in the process.

So even if dreaming about your ex isn’t always pleasant, know that it’s part of a healthy grieving process.

What you can do is focus on your relationship with God and let Him lead you to where He wants you to be.

Your unsettled feelings may cause you a lot of confusion right now, but with time and prayer, things will start to make more sense.

Then, you might come to realize that you’re still feeling angry or hurt because you didn’t get the closure you needed.

3) There are unresolved feelings of anger or hurt with your ex-lover

Closure from a breakup helps with the healing process, but that doesn’t mean it’s always possible.

You may have to accept that you might never get the answers or closure you’re looking for in that part of your life.

With that said, dreaming about your ex in a biblical context might mean that you still have some unresolved conflicts and past emotions of anger or hurt.

How is that so?

Well, it’s natural to want to know why things ended the way they did. You may find yourself wondering what you could have done differently or feel like you didn’t deserve to be treated that way.

It’s okay to feel those things, but don’t let them consume you.

Remember that God is in control.

As Psalms 34:18 says, “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

He knows what you’re going through and He will help you to heal.

What’s important is to choose to deal with these emotions in a healthy way. Otherwise, the negative feelings and emotional baggage could continue to fester and cause problems in your future relationships.

4) There could be unfinished business that needs to be resolved

It’s one thing to have unresolved feelings, but it’s another thing entirely to have unfinished business.

Unfinished business could be anything from something as simple as not returning your ex’s stuff, to something more serious like having an outstanding debt.

At times, these issues creep into our dreams because we haven’t dealt with them head-on.

As a result, they become a nagging reminder of what still needs to be done.

If this is the case, then it’s time to take care of that unfinished business. Doing so will help you to move on from the relationship and put closure to the dream once and for all.

But first, let me share with you a passage from Jeremiah 32:17 which says, “Ah Lord GOD! It is you who made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.”

This verse is a reminder that nothing is impossible for God. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the task at hand, know that He will give you the strength to discern the best way to take care of it.

Take some time to pray about the situation and ask God to give you guidance.

Once you’ve taken care of that unfinished business, you’ll be able to move on from your ex and the dream for good.

5) You’re missing some aspect of the relationship

Obviously, it’s quite normal to miss someone after a breakup. You’ve invested a lot of time and energy into the relationship, so it’s only natural to feel a sense of loss.

But sometimes, we tend to idealize relationships and forget about the negative aspects. So when we dream about our recent ex, we might be missing an aspect of the relationship that we enjoyed.

It could be anything from physical intimacy to feeling loved and cared for. If this is the case, then it’s important to take a step back and assess your current situation.

Now, this biblical passage may encourage you if you’re at this stage of your breakup. Psalms 119:28 says, “My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!”

The key here is to focus on God’s Word and let it be a source of strength for you.

Remember, such dreams about your exes can be a way for God to reveal things about yourself that you need to work on.

You see, it’s possible that you’re missing a part of your past relationship because you’re not giving that same part to yourself.

For instance, if you’re dreaming about your ex because you miss the physical intimacy, it could be a sign that you need to work on your insecurities, self-esteem, and body image.

Alternatively, it might be a sign that you need to take care of yourself emotionally and spiritually.

So use this dream as an opportunity to grow closer to God and learn more about His will for your life.

As 1 Chronicles 16:11 states, “Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.”

Doing so will help you to find what’s missing in your real life and fill that void with God’s love.

6) God’s making you realize that you’re not over the breakup

Many people take longer to get over a breakup, while others move on quickly. But just because someone appears to be moving on, doesn’t mean they really are.

They might just be burying their feelings or in denial.

If you dream of your ex soon after the breakup, or even years later, could mean that you’re not as over it as you thought.

This biblical passage from Galatians may help to encourage you if you find yourself in this situation. In chapter 6, verse 7, it says, “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”

This type of dream is God’s way of telling you that you’ll eventually have to face the consequences of your actions.

If you’ve ignored your emotional needs or buried your feelings of attachment, then you’ll eventually need to deal with them. Rather than living in denial, deal with them now.

So use this dream as a wake-up call to take the necessary steps in getting over your previous relationship.

It could be anything from writing down your thoughts in a journal or talking to a relationship coach.

This is exactly what I did when I was struggling to get over a toxic relationship.

I spoke with a coach at Relationship Hero to help me work through and let go of the negative feelings and figure out what I needed to do to move on.

Eventually, after a few sessions with them, I was able to let go of my past and start fresh.

If you’re struggling to get over your ex, this is what you can do, too.

Trust me, it could be the best decision you ever make.

7) You may not be ready for a new relationship

Getting back into the dating scene is the normal thing to do after a breakup. But sometimes, people aren’t really ready for it.

If you’re still dreaming about your ex, it could be a sign that you’re not quite ready to date again.

You might find yourself comparing your current partner to your ex or holding onto unrealistic expectations with your new partner.

As a result, you may not be giving new relationships a fair chance. And that’s not fair to you or the other person.

If this is the case, take some time for yourself to heal and work through your feelings.

It’s okay to be single for a while. In fact, it might even be necessary.

Your current relationship may be at risk of some level of emotional abuse if you’re not ready to date again.

As Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses.”

This passage is a reminder that everything happens for a reason and in God’s timing.

So if you’re not ready to date again, it’s because God hasn’t brought the right person into your life yet.

And that’s okay.

Allow yourself to heal from the sadness and betrayal, and focus on God. For your peace of mind, get some closure on your past relationship if you need it.

When the time is right, you’ll be ready to date again and start a new relationship.

Remember what God said in Psalms 147:3: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds,”

He will heal your broken heart in His time.

8) It may be time for you to forgive your ex

Forgiving your ex is the best gift you can give yourself. However, it’s also one of the hardest things to do.

You see, when we forgive someone, we’re not just letting them off the hook. We’re also choosing to let go of the hurt and anger we feel toward them.

And that’s not always easy, especially if they’ve hurt you deeply.

But forgiveness is a biblical principle that God calls us to live out. In Matthew 18:21-22, Peter asked Jesus how many times he should forgive his brother.

Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.”

In other words, we are called to forgive always and without conditions, no matter how simple or grave the offense is.

If you’re still dreaming about your ex, it may be time to forgive them. It doesn’t matter if they deserve it or not.

But more importantly, while forgiving your ex, forgive yourself, too.

According to James 5:16, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

Setting yourself free from the pain of your past will allow you to live more fully in the present.

It’s time to let go of the hurt and anger so you can move on with your life.

9) Having dreams about your ex may be a sign from God to change your ways

Surprisingly enough, God can use our dreams to communicate with us.

Just like the Bible, dreams can be interpreted in different ways.

But in general, dreams are a way for God to reveal things to us that we wouldn’t otherwise know.

If you keep having dreams about your ex, it may be a sign from God that there’s something you need to change in your life.

It could be something as simple as your attitude or the way you’re treating your partners.

Have you been disrespectful, dishonest, or unloving? Do you tend to take your partners for granted?

Or maybe it could be something more serious, like deciding to get into relationships with people who aren’t good for you.

Do you usually go for people who are emotionally unavailable? Or do you always seem to end up with partners who are controlling or abusive?

Taking these to mind, consider reflecting on how you decide for your love life.

In Isaiah 40:31, the Bible says, “but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

This biblical passage shows us that when we put our trust in God, He gives us the strength to overcome anything.

So once you realize your struggles in love life choices, ask God to give you the courage and wisdom to change your ways.

10) It’s God’s way of telling you it’s time to move on

Dreaming about your ex could also be God’s way of telling you that it’s time to move on.

That’s right, even though it may be painful, sometimes the best thing to do is to let go and move forward with your life.

According to Isaiah 9:2, “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”

Take this passage as a sign that even though you may be going through a tough time, God is there with you no matter what.

The thing is, letting go is easier to do. It’s holding on that’s hard.

That’s the funny thing about life.

We always want what we can’t have and we hold on to things that are no longer good for us.

But through God’s guidance, you can let go of the past with your ex. So have faith and trust that God has a plan for you.

It’s time to start fresh and begin a new and better chapter in your life.

What does it spiritually mean when you dream about your ex?

Dreaming about your ex doesn’t always have a spiritual significance, but some biblical passages can shed some light on the matter.

Here’s the thing: the biblical meaning of dreams can vary depending on which Bible passage you’re looking at.

They can provide the guidance we need to make tough decisions, or they can be a way for God to reveal things to us that we wouldn’t otherwise know.

Moreover, your spiritual beliefs play a role in dream interpretation.

That said, biblical meanings are just a starting point. It’s up to you to decide what the dream means for you, which is an opportunity to gain insight into your spiritual life.

To be honest, dream scenarios about your ex are a way for your subconscious mind to tell you that they form part of who you are today.

But as they can trigger emotions, be gentle with yourself in this process.

Now get this: you can transform your feelings and thoughts about dreaming about your ex through your breathing.

When my life seemed out of control, I turned to biblical passages for comfort. I also worked on my breathing.

In this life-changing video of shaman Rudá Iandê, he teaches you to control your emotions with how you breathe.

Now, shamanic practices may not be Christian, but these breathwork techniques are biblical.

In Ezekiel 3:1-3, the prophet Ezekiel is told by God to eat a scroll.

And what happens when he does? The sweetness of the honey enters his belly and brings him comfort.

In the same way, Rudá’s breathwork techniques can help you to find comfort by taking a breath.

It’s a simple but effective way to change your focus and find peace in the midst of chaos.

Final thoughts

The dream of an ex boyfriend or ex girlfriend can be interpreted in many ways. It could be a way for your unconscious mind to communicate with you.

The thing is, dreaming about the past is not just a conscious memory, but an unconscious one that continues to shape who we are in many ways. These dreams can be analyzed as both revealing and shaping our memories from long ago without any input from us.

This includes biblical meanings that can provide guidance and wisdom during tough times.

So if you’re struggling to make sense of a dream about your ex, consider what biblical passages can teach you about the situation.

You don’t have to be religious to interpret your dreams, but if you are, these biblical meanings can provide helpful context.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what the dream means for you.

No matter what interpretation you choose to believe, it’s important to go back to what your faith and gut are telling you.

At the end of the day, only you know what’s best for you. So trust your instincts and use your dreams as a way to connect with your spiritual side.

Remember, you always have the power to change your present and shape your future.
