I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about angel numbers lately. More and more people started seeing them daily.
Some think their occurrence is scary, while others embrace it and try to find the complete meaning behind it.
But, are angel numbers real?
Is this seemingly new and popular phenomenon a sign that a higher being is intervening in people’s lives to help them?
Read this guide if you want to discover the truth.
Who invented angel numbers?
The term “angel numbers” was first used by Doreen Virtue, author, and spiritual teacher, not long ago.
She wrote many books related to angels, angel therapy and created oracle card decks.
“The angels will often give you a message that involves a combination of two or more numbers,” said Doreen Virtue.
According to her, each of us has two or more guardian angels that accompany us from birth until death.
However, when she said “guardian angels” she wasn’t referring to them as a Christian would, but with New Age principles in mind.
To sum it up, Virtue believed that asking for angels’ help was the same as asking for God’s help.
In 2005, she published another book called Angel Numbers 101: The Meaning of 111, 123, 444, and Other Number Sequences, in which she claimed the angels helped her find spiritual meaning in these numbers.
She said that she “received angelically guided meanings that are very simple, down-to-earth, and practical.” Thus, deciphering the vibrational meaning of each number between 0 and 999.
Even so, she admitted that she was “a longtime student of Pythagorean numerology”.
This meant that her work was also based on the principles of numerology (Pythagoras is known as the Father of Modern Numerology), not only on spiritual guidance.
In other words, the author’s view on angel numbers is characterized by a combination of spiritual beliefs and numerology.
Another interesting aspect worth mentioning is that since Virtue wrote these books, she became a Christian.
She confessed that she was wrong to think that we should use tarot and oracles instead of asking God for help and answers.
However, even if fortune-telling and future-seeing don’t match the Christian doctrine, this doesn’t mean the author’s interpretations are incorrect.
Maybe she got all the numerological meanings right, so we should investigate further.
Are angel numbers real? Let’s find out what Pythagoras used to think.
Pythagoras on the meaning of numbers
Pythagoras and his followers believed that “the principle of mathematics was the principle of all things”, said Aristotle in his work Metaphysics.
Sadly, when he was alive (570 BC – 490 BC), he didn’t let any of his followers take written notes of his teachings. So, there is no written evidence of his findings.
However, others wrote about Pythagoras’ work long after and mentioned that he had intensively studied Chaldean numerology.
The Chaldean system attributed numbers to letters based on their frequency, and so did the Greek philosopher. But he arranged the letters alphabetically.
Also, “the Pythagoreans invested specific numbers with mystical properties”, notes Britannica.
They used logic when they established that the number 1 was a symbol of “unity and origin”.
If you think about it, you can create any number by adding the number 1 to itself as many times as needed.
Furthermore, they have attributed number 2 to the female principle, and number 3 to the male. Since the sum of 2 and 3 is 5, they’ve agreed that the number 5 refers to “marriage”.
Just as other numerologists had before him, Pythagoras tried to discern arithmetical and mystical relationships between numbers.
According to him, the Universe is built of vibrations, a fact demonstrated by musical harmony, which is related to whole-number ratios.
The main idea is that this Greek philosopher managed to find connections between numbers, music, medicine, and philosophy.
Because of his findings, his work was always considered pseudo-scientific.
The role of numerology in angel numbers
So, even if Pythagoras didn’t invent the concept of sacred numbers and couldn’t demonstrate it scientifically, it doesn’t mean his theories are bogus.
A woman named L. Dow Balliett didn’t think so either. In fact, she continued his work during the 1800s.
She managed to find that each number could be associated with a certain frequency and even color.
Simply put, she also believed that every one of us emits a certain vibrational frequency that must be in harmony with our life path.
Thanks to numbers and the principles of numerology, you can find out your life path number.
However, you can’t measure your personal vibrational frequency.
As a matter of fact, modern numerology gives you the opportunity to find out what your heart number is and what your maturity number is as well.
There is also the name numerology that you can use to gain a deeper insight into your desires and ambitions, weak and strong points.
So, does this mean that angel numbers are real, or at least partially real?
- On one hand, we can agree that numbers are sacred and that there is meaning to them.
- On the other hand, we don’t know for sure whether they are a mental construct, or come from a divine source.
Are angel numbers Biblical?
According to the Bible, numbers can only be studied empirically.
In other words, it’s important how many times a certain number appears in the Bible and the context in which it’s mentioned.
Cosmic Embrace says:
“Biblical numerology is based on numbers that appear numerous times within the Bible, and God uses these numbers to portray a form of symbolic meaning.”
However, Christians say the numbers themselves have absolutely no divine meaning and they can’t be sent as messages from angels.
They believe that angels don’t draw attention to themselves in this way.
Angels may appear in dreams and visions, but they never communicate using numbers or sequences of numbers.
The study of such occurrences is closely linked with the occult because it involves divination and the desire to foresee the future.
According to Deuteronomy 18:10–12, “There shall not be found among you anyone who […] is a soothsayer or one who interprets omens, […] or a medium. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord.”
However, this fact doesn’t mean angel numbers aren’t real. They could be real, but bad.

3 expert opinions on angel numbers
Psychics, astrologers, and mathematicians share their views on angel numbers.
- According to Mystic Michaela, a fourth-generation psychic medium, in her work the Angel Numbers Book, you must open your mind in order to receive messages from the angels. Otherwise, you might overlook them or have a hard time finding their meaning in your specific case.
“Angels communicate on a high-vibrational frequency fueled by love, emotion, and the unseen yet powerful pushes and pulls in the world around us,” said Mystic Michaela. So, in case you’re wondering why you didn’t receive any messages yet, it could be because you’re a skeptic.
- The Independent quotes a distinguished professor of mathematics, who admits that numerology, sports, and psychology work hand in hand: “Sport is about psychology and if you genuinely believe there is something powerful about your number then there is no doubt you will play better.”
His name is Marcus du Sautoy and he is referring to powerful prime numbers such as number 77. Only a few basketball and football players wear this number. However, he doesn’t speak of angel numbers in particular, but numbers in general.
- Astrologer Aliza Kelly thinks that angel numbers can provide valuable information regarding the right path in life, as well as solutions to dilemmas. She often combines astrology and numerology to generate a comprehensive analysis of certain events and people.
However, she also thinks that it’s up to you “whether you assign them to angels, guides, ancestors, spirits, or simply a higher state of your own consciousness.” As you can see, experts in various fields share the same opinion on angel numbers. They don’t focus on where these numbers come from, but on their meaning and applicability in our lives.
Could this be the right view on the matter?
What makes angel numbers real could be their influence on a person’s life.
Anyone who has already seen an angel number, decoded its meaning, and made changes according to it, can easily confirm that angel numbers are real.
Even if they don’t know for sure who sent them messages, these people experience positive changes in their lives by following the simplest recommendations in the form of numbers.
What are the real angel numbers?
Angel numbers are sudden and repeated occurrences that supposedly carry information about a person’s current life situation, spiritual path, and other meaningful aspects.
Although decipherable thanks to numbers symbolism, angel numbers are not related to your birth date or the date when you see them.
When they appear in a person’s life, they usually come as sequences of two, three, or four numbers.
There are also mirror numbers, such as 11:11, and palindromic numbers (they start and end with the same numbers), such as 1221.
In addition, real angel numbers are not those that you have to look for. Their occurrences are usually surprising, unexpected, and striking.
I mean, after seeing the angel number 333 multiple times in a day, in different settings, it ends up being impossible to ignore.
When this happens, numerous spiritual advisors think that we should stop for a second and pay attention to our feelings and thoughts.
Since this is not based on exact science, every clue that you can gather could prove to be important when trying to decipher the bigger picture.
Each number carries a vibrational frequency that can be decoded, regardless of whether you think it’s coming from the Universe, a higher being, an angel, or God.
Typically, angel numbers appear all around us. They can reveal themselves when you look at the clock, pay your bills, take the bus, read cryptocurrency statistics, and so on.
In other words, anything that works with numbers can be a source of such messages.
In addition, angel numbers can also appear in your dreams. So, if you experience a recurring dream with the same numbers in it, they could be angel numbers.
How do angel numbers actually work?
Experts say that as soon as you start noticing these numbers, there are two things that you can do in order to use their influence.
- The first thing would be to analyze your thoughts and feelings during their occurrence because the numbers you see can serve as answers to stressful questions.
- The second thing would be to look up the spiritual, religious, cultural, and numerological meanings of each digit comprised by the angel number you see.
In this way, you can correlate their meanings with what happens in your life at that time.
For example, if you are single and the angel number you see is about marriage, then it goes without saying you shouldn’t expect it to happen overnight or disregard it either.
If you admit that each number emanates a certain energy type, then you understand that it might take a while for you to align with this number’s frequency.
So, after seeing such an angel number, it would be natural for you to start focusing on that area of your life.
This is how angel numbers are supposed to work. They draw your attention to a certain aspect of your life, and they give you clues on how to improve them.
However, it is up to you to decipher them based on your thoughts, feelings, number symbolism, and spiritual beliefs.
The meaning attributed to these numbers is not fixed, but highly subjective and interpretable. In other words, you have to use your own judgment when you decode them.
Even so, if angel numbers can’t be scientifically explained, does it mean they are not real?
Is it good or bad to see angel numbers?
In my experience, angel numbers are never a bad sign to see.
Worst case scenario, their meaning can prepare you for something bad that was anyway going to happen, with or without you knowing it.
The meaning of each angel number is closely related to the specific life context of the person who sees it.
Many of us are involved in toxic relationships, but some of us notice angel number 1111 and end up making important changes in our lives with positive outcomes.
“I believe that people who have constant contact with the 1111 phenomena have some type of a positive mission to accomplish.”
Or, many people notice angel number 66 when they are focusing too much on their career, rather than family, when the first is going great and the latter is shaky.
So, regardless of whether they are divine or occult, these numbers seem to have a positive influence on the lives of the people who see them and embrace them.
However, you must know that even if you believe in angel numbers, you don’t have to do something when you see one.
You can choose to acknowledge it, but not act on its meaning.
The truth about angel numbers
Christians say that angels don’t communicate with the help of numbers, and they emphasize the fact that divination is a sin.
However, “angel numbers” is a term that emerged as part of the New Age movement, and it is not in accordance with Christian dogma.
Mostly based on numerological, cultural, religious, and spiritual meanings, angel numbers don’t have a clear source.
Because we don’t know for sure who or what makes these numbers occur, we may tend to believe they are not real.
Depending on what they believe in, people think angel numbers come from ascended masters, higher beings, God, the Universe, and so on.
Even so, what we believe in doesn’t change the way we can use angel numbers and their meanings to improve our lives, find ourselves, and evolve.
Just as Erica Sommers says, “In any case, the most important factor to consider in interpreting angel numbers – biblical or otherwise – is your own faith.”
Are angel numbers real?
Now that you have all the info that you need, you can decide for yourself. What you believe in and your spirituality are important factors in this decision.
If you are a Christian, then you’ll probably want to stay away from any form of divination.
However, if you’re not, you can discover more about the world and yourself by paying attention to these numbers.
